I want to ride my bicycle

I walked out of the door at work today at 4pm (I had to get to my son's party. see below) Needless to say I was fairly fucking surprised when I was greeted by about 200 bicycle messengers from around the world. Unbeknownst to me, Dublin is hosting the 15th Annual Bike Messenger World Championship this weekend. My missus and I had this occupation for a short time each when we were younger. She did it in the more glamourous location of San Francisco (which on the downside has lots of big hills), I practiced the profession for a very short time here in the less glamourous Dublin city (nice and flat terrain).

Suffice to say I felt slightly uncool mounting my crap bike with it's ailing crank whilst all around me there were hundreds of clourful well-oiled fixed wheel bikes (which are de riguer these days for the discerning messenger).

They're about Dublin for the next few days, so if you're into checking out some surly individuals with tatoos and smelling of stale sweat saying things like 'Sign it beside the X', you can check out their itinerary here.

so what's your theory on the fixies? is it all just a pose? I can't make my mind up at all.

They're fine for going up and down Baggot Street on but you'd be fairly fucked cycling it from town, up that slow incline to your gaff. If you're used to cycling one of those aul 'hi nelly' bikes with brake rods I'm sure it would be ok, but in my humble opinion gears were invented for a very good reason.
